Year 9 Camp Reflection.
This Term, in Week 5, the Year 9 cohort headed to Somers for their first Mac.Rob camp. This shared experience forged new bonds and fostered friendships, creating lifelong memories. Whether it was working together through team challenges, making toasties for our mates, or kayaking down Merricks creek, these experiences brought the cohort closer together.
A particularly fond memory was stand-up paddleboarding. Many of us were hesitant at first, but the pristine beach, stunning sunset, and the kindness and patience of our teachers allowed us to tackle the challenge head on. Many of us didn’t end up standing at all, but it didn’t matter. The shared challenge led to some hilarious moments and the formation of new friendships.
The evening activities were just as memorable. On our first night, we took part in a trivia quiz covering music, pop culture, science, and even our knowledge of our teachers! The Camp staff kept us entertained throughout with plenty of surprises along the way, but the “teacher” round left us with more questions than answers… To finish, we competed in a lip-sync battle, with songs ranging from Baby to Baby Shark. Lip synching in front of a crowd was intimidating, but much easier alongside newfound friends.
The Camp staff put on a disco on the second night, and many of us sang and danced until we were exhausted and our voices were sore. Whether we spent the evening in the middle of the dance circle, or quietly gazing at the stars, it was a night none of us will forget.
Beyond the activities, the camp offered something even more valuable: time. Time to connect with peers without the usual stresses of school, time to share stories with friends late into the night, and time to step outside of our comfort zones alongside new faces.
Throughout the camp, both our teachers and the camp staff played a vital role in shaping the experience. The camp staff guided us through each activity with enthusiasm, encouraging us to do our best and make the most of every opportunity. Our teachers made the experience even more enjoyable by joining in activities (while also keeping us safe) and doing their best to make sure we got some sleep.
We would especially like to thank Mr. Ritchie and Ms. Phillips for their support throughout the camp and for ensuring everything ran smoothly behind the scenes.
From exciting challenges to quiet nights in cabins, Year 9 Camp created core memories that will stay with us throughout our time at Mac.Rob.
