Interschool Theatresports.

The tale of the annual inter-school theatresports competition: A fantastical journey of forging friendship, riveting rivalry, and reconnecting with an age-old tradition.

_____

Have you ever wondered what makes Theatre at MacRob special? Like many others, I haven’t.

At least… not until recently.

Alongside fifteen of Mac.Rob's finest improvisers, I made my way to Melbourne High School for our annual Inter-School Theatresports Competition. What began only a few years ago as a small exchange between neighbouring schools has gradually evolved into one of the most anticipated traditions on the theatre calendar.

As we crossed the grounds of Melbourne High and entered the A2 Space, I felt a strange sense of familiarity wash over me. Sitting in one of the slightly uncomfortable black plastic chairs, watching the overhead lights reflect off their glossy surfaces, I was struck by a sudden realisation. This would be my last competition.

You know that feeling when you're still in the middle of an experience, yet somehow you already know you'll miss it? Not quite sadness. Not quite relief. Something closer to gratitude. The awareness that an entire chapter is slowly drawing to a close.

I looked around the room. To my left, fifteen talented performers gathered in a semi circle. They chatted, they laughed, they rehearsed. Most importantly, they carried that unmistakable look of confidence. If recent history was anything to go by, they had every reason to be.

The competition began with ‘First Line, Last Line’. The scores were neck-and-neck from the start: 3–3 after the opening round. Second round, 7 to 6, in Mac.Rob’s favour. Game after game, scene after scene, neither side gave an inch. Scenes played out in seconds, the audience erupted with laughter, the space was encompassed by a joyous atmosphere.

The rivalry was fierce. Both schools pushed one another to be quicker, funnier, and more creative than they thought possible.

As the final scores were tallied, the room held its breath. 67-66. Mac.Rob has done it again. By a single point.

Remarkably, this has become something of a tradition itself. Since MHS x MacRob exchanges resumed, Mac.Rob has maintained a remarkable winning streak, claiming victories from 2024 through 2026. Somehow, year after year, the margin had remained remarkably narrow.

Ever since the series of inter-school exchanges began in 2023, Mac.Rob has maintained an overwhelming series of wins from 2024-6, with a consistent 1 point in the lead year-by-year. And this competition followed the same trend. One single point. Not enough to diminish Melbourne High's incredible performances, but just enough to keep the trophy travelling back across the Yarra.

Yet, the tale of this competition did not begin in 2026. Like many grand, mystical adventures, its origins lie way back …

… Back to 2023.

The lingering effects of the years of social isolation still lingered amidst the masses. Students were reconnecting, rebuilding friendships, and rediscovering activities that had once brought people together.

Within the creative sanctuary of K300, two grandmasters (captains) of theatre at Mac.Rob contemplated, collaborated and conspired on how to reignite a sense of connection through performance. Their idea was deceptively simple: bring students together through improvisation.

From those conversations emerged the first Melbourne High and Mac.Rob Theatresports exchange. What started as a single event soon became something much larger, a tradition that gave students opportunities to perform, connect, and challenge themselves beyond the walls of their own schools. Three years later, the legacy of that idea is still growing.

For some students, Theatresports is a chance to develop confidence. For others, it is an opportunity to meet like-minded people from another school. And for many of us, it becomes a place where some of our most memorable school experiences are made.

Looking back, I realise that the competition was never really about winning. The scores are exciting. The trophy is nice. The bragging rights are certainly enjoyable. But what remains is the friendships formed on stage, the spontaneous moments of brilliance, and the confidence gained from stepping into the unknown and trusting your teammates to catch you.

As I attended my final competition, I found myself appreciating something I had previously taken for granted. Theatre at Mac.Rob is special not because of any single performance or victory. It is special because it creates spaces where people can connect, create, and grow together.

So the next time you stood outside the theatre, hesitant to enter, just remember this:

I was once standing exactly where you are. And now, as I walk away from my final competition, I leave more fulfilled than ever. All because I chose to walk through those gates.
