Year 11 Politics Parliament Excursion.
On July 31st, the Year 11 Politics class were fortunate enough to visit the Victorian Parliament for an excursion. We were excited to ask questions of a range of politicians and deepen our understanding of the inner workings of Victoria’s political landscape.
As the day continued, we interacted and held meaningful conversations with different politicians such as Mac.Rob’s local MP, Nina Taylor, and the Minister and Shadow Minister of Education, Ben Carroll and Jess Wilson. A highlight was talking to independent senator Georgie Purcell, and gaining an insight into her career as a young woman in politics.
Through a tour around Parliament, we were able to gain a contextual understanding on how Victorian democracy came to be, as we observed its historical significance and architecture. We were able to connect our experience to key questions in our Unit 2 study, including the extent of democracy in Australia’s political institutions and processes, and the political issues facing Australian democracy today in the upcoming State election in 2026.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this excursion: To the students for their enthusiastic participation; Mr. Bulman for tagging along and saving our First Aid kit from being lost on a tram; our parliament chaperone, Lewis; and Mr. Desmond, our teacher, for organising this wonderful event. This day was a truly rewarding and memorable experience for all of us involved. 😊
