IDAHOBIT Day 2025

On Friday, May 16th, our Mac.Rob Inclusion Committee had the pleasure of hosting one of its biggest events of the year.

Can you guess what it was?

Well here’s a clue: This event is acknowledged across the world, and it marks the anniversary of the removal of homosexuality from the WHO Classification of diseases.

If you guessed IDAHOBIT, then you would be correct!

IDAHOBIT is a day celebrated on May 17 worldwide, that aims to enforce the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, and raise awareness amongst the general community about the entrenched queerphobia within all societies around the world.

Earlier during the week on Tuesday, Mac.Rob students engaged in a collaborative and compassionate Connect lesson. This included a trivia game designed to challenge assumptions, educational information slides and a collaborative poster-making activity. The student-made posters were displayed around the school, as a reminder of the genuine opportunities we all have to help the people in our life to feel supported.

To begin what we hope was a fabulous day at Mac.Rob, members of the Inclusion committee greeted all students and staff members at the gates, and handed out rainbow ribbons as they arrived at school. To make the day a bit more exciting, students who were a step ahead and wore a touch of rainbow with their school uniforms were rewarded with adorable stickers!

After a lot of anticipation, time dawned for our Jeopardy-style trivia event. Hope-filled competitive spirits soared and table-tennis-racket buzzers lay clutched on the table, to see which team would be crowned the winners and take home the prizes!

We were thrilled to see that the Queer Jeopardy event was attended by students and teachers alike, showing that community is important for everyone, no matter who you are. It was great to see everyone cheering so passionately, even though it did get a bit competitive at times!

We also set up a more calm activity outside in the Rose Garden with IDAHOBIT themed chalk art at recess and lunch. Many students stopped by to write or doodle a supportive message, and it was lovely to see the positivity spread as more people joined in.

Overall, our team was so proud to see our hard work pay off. We had spent many weeks organising this day, and we’re so grateful to the Mac.Rob community for your engagement and positivity. We hope members of the LGBTQIA+ community within our school felt recognised and accepted, and continue to feel welcome at Mac.Rob.

A massive thank you to everyone who participated and celebrated IDAHOBIT with us! We can’t wait to see your enthusiasm again for even more exciting plans for Wear it Purple day!
