Sports At Mac.Rob | May Update.

Ride2School Day

On March 27th, the Sports and Enviro Teams came together to organise a day full of excitement to celebrate Ride2School Day: Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel, where Mac.Robbians were encouraged to walk, ride, scoot, or skate to school.

Upon arrival into school, a free and healthy breakfast was given in the gym, including smoothies, yoghurt cups, juices and Milo, fairy bread, and carbs from Bakers Delight, courtesy of the 2026 Sports Team.

Following this morning high, the rest of the day was an enormous success, with various activities provided, such as a morning run with the Run Club, walking groups from Flinders Street with the Enviro Team, basketball and table tennis hosted at lunch, along with a raffle with numerous chocolate prizes and a $1000 99bikes giftcard or a brand new bike, provided by the Port Phillip Council.

We hope this day encourages students to be more environmentally conscious of their travel to school, and to inspire them to choose an alternative route where possible.

Lap of the Lake

On April 22nd, students from across all Year levels gathered with enthusiasm and House spirit for this year’s annual Lap of the Lake. This exciting House event challenged participants to run or walk a course around Albert Park lake, earning valuable points for their Houses along the way.

With the House Captains cheering from the sideline, hype music blasting, sports puns keeping spirits high, and the companionship of their friends, students completed the 5km course with determination and energy. The atmosphere through the event was vibrant and encouraging, as students motivated each other to keep going and represent their Houses proudly.

After completing their lap, students were rewarded with colourful Zooper Doopers prepared by the Sports Team, helping everyone cool off after their efforts in the warm weather.

Congratulations to all students who participated and contributed to the success of the event. A special congratulations goes to our top runner, Nicole R, who completed the race in an impressive time of 21 minutes and 16 seconds! Overall, Oreads took the win with the highest number of points from runners and walkers, finishing with an outstanding total of 515 points.

The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to enjoy the sunshine, stay active, and strengthen House spirit through friendly competition. We hope everyone enjoyed taking part in this memorable event!

Interschool Sports

As Term 2 chips away, our Mac.Rob sports students continue to fiercely compete within Interschool sport competitions against other schools. We are immensely proud of all students who have competed in a variety of sports, whether it’s swimming, diving, netball, AFL, or softball, and consistently represent Mac.Rob with pride, resilience, and sportsmanship. Below are reflections from our students about their passions, and stories about their sports.

Swimming

In the latter half of Term 1, Mac.Rob’s best swimmers proudly represented our school at the Interschool Swimming Division/Regionals Competition. We are so proud of our swimming team’s efforts, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship on the day.

At the Beachside Division Swimming Championships, Mac.Rob has won the Intermediate Girls Shield, the Senior Girls Shield and the overall Girls Shield, whilst placing third overall as a school! A special shoutout to Karen J, Isabelle H, and Ella Y who were awarded Age Group Champions.

Students then progressed to the Regional Championships, where Mac.Rob placed 3rd overall as a team out of 60+ schools in our region. It is our pleasure to share that every single person who swam took a medal home - an amazing achievement! Alongside this result, eleven students qualified for the State Championships across 12 events.

Year 9: Karen J, Dhyana R, Aimee D, Charlize V, Kate H, Lyn K

Year 10: Weylen T, Ella Y, Amber D, Isabelle H

Year 12: Jowdy M

A special acknowledgement to Chelsea, Adele, and Deeva who supported the students throughout the competition!

Congratulations to Weylen, who swam up two age groups at Southern Metropolitan Region (SMR) Swimming, and set new SMR records in the following events: 16-20 200m Freestyle, 18-20 50m Breaststroke, and 16-20 100m Freestyle. Well done!

Senior Netball

On May 4th, Mac.Rob took two teams all the way down to Dandenong's Gloria Pyke netball facility to engage several schools in competition. The day was filled with gruelling weather for those outdoors, facing the sun and wind every game, and fierce competition inside.

We took on several schools - won some, lost others - but we were filled with enthusiasm and cheer no matter the situation. Everyone played their best and were challenged to step out and try new positions, different plays, and to work together. The day ended with funny coordinated team chants for each goal and smiles all around. Even though we weren't able to move on in the competition, we had an incredible day playing with our friends and building a collective supportive and competitive spirit together!

Diving

On Wednesday, April 22nd, when the rest of the school was doing the Lap of the Lake, we went to the School Sports Victoria Diving Regionals and State Championships!

The competition was split into two events, with regionals held in the morning, followed by the top three divers from each school region being selected to compete in the State championships. We both came 1st in our respective school region, proudly representing Mac.Rob, and progressed into the final competition.

Caitlin achieved 4th in her age category (15-16s), just shy of winning a medal, and Jo-Lynn achieved 2nd place in the 17-20 age category, earning a silver medal.

Overall, the competition was friendly and welcoming, where divers of all ages and experiences were able to participate in the sport, and more experienced divers were given the opportunity to compete against each other. We were able to meet many friendly people from different schools, many of whom were trying diving for the first time, and loved it!

Senior Softball

After weeks of training and preparation, we travelled down to Kingston Heath Reserve on April 27th and competed in our pool of three schools (Mac.Rob, EMC, and Clyde North). Both EMC and Clyde North were great competition, but we took home wins of 18-1 and 17-1, respectively.

However, in the finals, we were faced with much tougher competition, and although we put up a good fight, we came short of the win, 2-6. Our season does not end here though, as we have been invited to States later this month.

With further training and reflection on our performance, we look forward to hopefully beating KooWeeRup again if we face them again for round 2! We would like to thank Mr Hendricks for his continual support and we look forward to taking on States!

Senior AFL

On Friday, May 8th, the Senior Football Team, accompanied by Ms. Naing and Mr. Fernandez, came together at Highett Reserve to compete in the Senior Football Beachside Division. Going into the first game against Mentone Girls’ Secondary College, our team didn’t have very high expectations; nonetheless, we collectively worked to maintain possession of the ball, played aggressively on defense, and were ruthless in attack. While the result of the game did not end in our favour, it was an incredible learning experience for the whole team, as we celebrated each others’ wins and strong efforts on the field.

As we progressed into the second game against Albert Park Secondary, we demonstrated the strong team dynamic we had fostered over the course of the first game, whilst further implementing new skills and tactics which ultimately led us to lead at half time, with a score of 8 points (one goal and two behinds). For the remainder of the game, we continued to develop great teamwork and communication skills, while also creating many fond memories to look back on, even if our lead was unsustained.

Overall, while the scores didn’t reflect in our favour, the entire day filled with team chants, high spirits, many laughs, and lots of snacks, turned out to be a phenomenal experience. Finally, we’d love to give a huge shout out to our coaches - Ms. Rollinson (though she wasn’t present on the day), Mr. Fernandez, and Ms. Naing - the umpires, the opposing teams, and our amazing teammates for giving it their all and making this day a huge success and a day to remember!

Intermediate AFL

On Friday, May 8th, I had the pleasure of co-captaining the Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School AFL team, alongside Stella Z.

At Le Page Park in Cheltenham, we played a total of three games for the day, with the first against Cheltenham High School. Unfortunately we lost, but this didn’t deter our team. Next we played against Leibler Yavneh College. They put up a fair fight, but in the end Mac.Rob secured a win! We ended the day by playing Elwood College, and despite our best efforts, we were met with another loss; but all in all it was a good day, and I know I speak for all the girls on our team when I say it was nice to have the opportunity to play against these schools and come out with a win.

A big congratulations to everyone on our team! Well done girls, you did an amazing job, and I’m really proud of how you all played. Also, a massive thank you to Ms. Toohey for her amazing coaching, Ms. Rollinson for her training sessions, and Ms. Al Baiiaty for your wonderful help on Friday - we could not have gotten through the day without you all.

Mac.Rob Sports Achievements

One of Mac.Rob’s Year 12 students, Sienna Y-H, has recently represented Team Vic in the School Sport Australia National Tennis Champs. The championships were held in Perth and Team Vic came fourth. Sienna has been recognised as one of the best tennis players across all states/territories and has been selected to be part of the All Australian team. We are immensely proud of her outstanding achievement and cannot wait to see her represent Australia!
